Holy Helping Hands was founded in 1998 by a group of sworn and non-sworn female
law enforcement personnel and an elementary school educator. The winter of 1997-1998 in Southern California was one
of the worst El Nino seasons in over twenty years. The shelters were full and the homeless people on the street
were being deluged with unrelenting wind and rain. The cardboard boxes they were using as homes could not withstand the
harshness of the winter elements. At 2:00 a.m. one morning, the founder of the organization was given a vision
to help make a difference in the lives of others that season.
She contacted some of her Christian girlfriends. She called several police personnel and one fifth
grade teacher and Holy Helping Hands was born. Additionally, as police officers and educators we also saw daily
that both the criminal justice system and the educational institutions were failing our communities. We knew that there
was more to life than merely arresting people and passing children to the next grade based on their age and not on the child's
actual learning and performance. So, instead of merely talking about how broken the system was, we decided to do something
to make a difference. In 2008, we incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since our inception, we have added several other programs. In addition to assisting
the homeless, our programs include; Veteran Affairs, Adopt-a-School, Substance Abuse Outreach, Domestic Violence
Outreach, US Soldier Support, Holiday Gift Giving and the Cinderella & Prince Charming Prom Project for Foster
Youth.
We often collaborate with other service-minded groups/organizations; (Godparents Youth Organization (GYO), some Los Angeles
County Foster care homes, The Virtuous Woman Sunday School class, N.C.N.W.-- Los Angeles Chapter, and W.I.T.N.E.S.S.
Christian Woman's Book-club). Some of our projects are on-going while others are quarterly or annually.
The founder was recently given a new vision: to establish H.O.P.E.'S
Closet. H.O.P.E. is the acronym for Helping Other People Excel. Our target date to open HOPE's
Closet is spring 2009. See the following pages for an in-depth description of our projects and how you can become involved.
