Adopt-a-School
The members of our organization
adopted Foster Elementary School in Compton, CA as one of our on going programs. In the past, we have donated $1,000.00
to assist parents to purchase school uniforms. We assisted in this endeavor by the Los Angeles Chapter of the National
Organization of Black Enforcement Executives and WITNESS Book Club.
Additionally our members
have participated in Career Days at the school and purchased toys for Christmas. In 2008, the 100th anniversary of the
birth of Dr. Seuss, we read books during the "Read Across America" celebration. In 2009, we were joined in
Read Across America by NBC News personality Ms. Beverly White and actress Kimberly Barnett. The kindergarten through
fifth graders were thrilled to have these personalities take time out of their busy schedules to read to them. A heart
felt thanks to Ms. White and Ms. Barnett.
Cinderella and Prince Charming Project
This program was established to assist Los
Angeles County foster youth participate in their prom activities. Foster youth seldom have resources for "extras".
Our members feel that all youth should have the opportunity to attend the prom. Our contributions purchased prom tickets,
dresses/accessories and tuxedos. To see these deserving youth with mega watt smiles, dressed to the nines was priceless!
Veteran
Affairs
Quarterly Holy Helping Hands collaborates with
other organizations (NCNW, Junior League and WITNESS) to provide services and programs for the veterans at the VA Hospital
in Westwood, CA. We co-host the following annual events; Valentine's Day, Halloween and Christmas parties, Bingo and
a Spring Carnival. The veterans of all ages (Korean War to the present) are so appreciative of the time we spend with
them. Holy Helping Hands never want our veterans to feel that their sacrifice has been forgotten. We are committed
to ensuring that they are not forgotten or overlooked.
This
Mother's Day (2009) Holy Helping Hands will be hosting a "Pamper Party" for the female veterans. They
will be treated to a day of having their hair, nails and makeup done.
We need barbers to donate their services so that we can
provide a "Appreciation Day" for our male veterans for Father's
Day. Call (800) 550-9137 or e-mail HolyHelpingHands@aol.com if you are willing to donate your services.
U.S. Soldier Support
In the past, we adopted a unit deployed to Iraq. We sent them care packages containing the following requested items;
white T-shirts and socks, cookies, candy, gum, personal hygiene items and letters from the children at our adopted school
Foster Elementary.
Substance Abuse Outreach
In 2003, we adopted Cannon House Female Sober
Living Facility as on-going project. Our members assist the ladies to matriculate back into main stream society after
being released from prison on drug related charges. We provide re-entry training such as building healthy self esteem,
interview techniques and appropriate interview clothing.
Domestic Violence Outreach
Members conduct training seminars to women groups at churches, shelters and schools on the warning signs of abusive partners.
We have also donated clothing to domestic violence shelters.
Holiday Gift Giving
We identify needy families for Thanksgiving and Christmas and provide food and gifts.
HOPE's Closet
H.O.P.E is the acronym for Helping Other People Excel. This is the latest Holy Helping
Hands project. We currently are in the process of constructing the closet and barring any further construction set backs,
we hope to have the closet open and operational by June 2009.
This closet will be used to assist job seekers by providing them two interview appropriate outfits free of charge.
We are working with Employment Specialist Mrs. Eileen Arthur to ensure that the applicants are screened and prepared to interview
for employment positions.
We need
individuals and organizations to assist by donating "gently worn"clothing to HOPE's Closet. All clothing
should be clean, pressed and on hangers. All donors will be provided contribution receipts. Pickup is available
in some areas. Call (800) 550-9137 or e-mail HolyHelpingHands@aol.com for pickup.
